Genesis
The origins of the Bénédictine elixir
Plants and distillation techniques were scarcely a secret for Vincelli. By all accounts he crafted several recipes, including one based on local medicinal plants, enhanced by oriental spices, which became famous throughout the region. For almost three centuries, the Benedictines produced the famous elixir of Friar Bernardo, but this was interrupted by the French Revolution in 1789.
The revival
In 1863, Alexandre Le Grand, a merchant and collector of religious art, discovered the lost recipe for this elixir in a book in his collection. Intrigued by the discovery and after many attempts, he successfully recreated the mysterious liqueur that he called Bénédictine.
Le Palais
To house his precious liqueur, Alexandre Le Grand decided to have a palace-cum-factory built to represent the glory of his Bénédictine.
